Benefits of Contact Lenses

Compared to eyeglasses, contact lenses offer a number of advantages. For example, this vision correction method offers:

  • Optimal comfort: For some, the weight of eyeglasses is uncomfortable. Glasses also have a tendency to slide down your nose throughout the day.
  • Improved peripheral vision: Glasses can inhibit peripheral vision, while contact lenses offer a completely restored field of vision.
  • Fog- and reflection-free vision: Eyeglasses can easily become smudged or fogged. Your vision may also be negatively impacted by reflections from nearby objects. Contact lenses eliminate all of these concerns.
  • The ability to wear sunglasses: Individuals who choose contact lenses are free to choose any style of sunglasses they choose and are not bound by prescription eyewear or fit-over sunglasses.

Like eyeglasses, contacts correct vision by focusing light on the retina properly. When you wear contact lenses, they change the direction of light rays entering the eye to compensate for refractive errors. The main difference between contacts and glasses is that contact lenses sit directly on the eye and “float” on the protective tear film.

Am I a Candidate for Contacts?

In years past, contact lenses were only available to certain types of patients. With advancements in the field of eye care, however, this treatment is now appropriate for those with nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, astigmatism, and even dry eye syndrome. During a consultation at our practice, we can assess your eye health and determine if contact lenses are right for you.

What to Expect during a Lens Fitting

If you are interested in contact lenses, the first step is to undergo a comprehensive eye examination. During this visit, one of our doctors will evaluate your vision and determine the degree of refractive errors present. Next, we will discuss your contact lens options with you in detail and recommend a solution that is appropriate for your unique needs and eye anatomy.

Our doctors have vast experience with specialty contact lens fittings and can assess your eye health, lifestyle needs, and more in order to recommend the best type.

After your contact lenses have been chosen, we will assess your eyes with a keratometer. This special instrument measures the curvature of your cornea. You may be provided with one or more pairs of trial contact lenses. This will allow us to assess the fit and help you become accustomed to your new lenses. Once we discover contacts that work well for you, we can provide you with a final prescription.
